What do I eat?

There is nothing to special about it. Usually when I'm asked, people are
looking for an answer describing a brutal diet that no one would ever choose
to follow. The answer is nothing of the sort. I enjoy eating and don't want to
give it up. As I've grown older (I can hear all you older people laughing, when
you start at 14 and continue for 20 years, you notice the difference in your
recovery time, metabolism, etc, I didn't say old, I said older) I've realized your
body doesn't metabolize the way it used to. I would venture to say that as I
continue I will need to constantly re-evaluate what I eat.

The things I do are not perfect, I could do more, but other areas of my life
may suffer (people that diet too hard don't smile, I like to smile). This is just
what I do, not necessarily what you should do.

  • Breakfast: Protein Shake, 100% Whey Protein
  • Late morning: Brown Rice (maybe 3 cups cooked)
  • Early Afternoon: Protein Bar and a yogurt
I know, right now your thinking, no diet my A$$, wait...
  • Dinner: What ever my beautiful wife and I decide on. Seriously, It
could be grilled chicken or steak, or it could be pizza, everyone
    needs fat in their diet
  • Snack: I try to make it some fruit, but a decent amount.
  • DRINK WATER ALL DAY LONG! This is something that most people
overlook. "It doesn't fit in my daily routine" is the excuse I hear, well
make it fit. If you don't do anything else, DRINK WATER. Studies say
anywhere from 8-13 cups a day. That's about 1/2 to 1 gallon per day.
It should also be increased, 2-4 cups per hour of regular physical
    activity.

The whole mid day thing is really because its easier for me. I work a lot of
days from my home office and this way I can make a large pot of  brown rice
in the beginning of the week and not have to wonder about what I'm having
every day, same with the protein bar and yogurt.

When I have dinner, I eat, I don't hold back at all. I could easily have more of
a lunch and a smaller dinner. But cancer runs in my family, I've read about
the benefits of short grain brown rice, If I can incorporate it into my daily diet,
why wouldn't I?

How many calories a day? I have no idea. I just eat what I need so I don't feel
tired. If you train yourself to listen, your body really does tell you what you
need (not necessarily what you want).
The Workout

I usually workout 5-6 days a week. I keep my workouts fast, an hour or so.
Day 1:        Chest, Biceps, and Abdominals
Day 2:        Back, Triceps
Day 3:        Shoulders and Abdominals
Day 4:        Legs (Quads, Hamstrings, and Calves)

Then I repeat. By not having a scheduled day off, I can simply take the day
off when my work schedule doesn't allow me to get to the gym.

I warm up every day with 12-15 minutes of cardio

Is it perfect or pretty, absolutely not, but it works for me. After this many years
of physical training, I'm really addicted to the feeling. I'll get more into detail
in my workout section.
Why?

Balance. All things exist in a balance. Why should humans be different from
anything else? We are not. Working out is not about looking good, it's about
feeling good. The body exists in a delicate balance, I believe that physical
activity, just like reading a book, painting, or picking up a musical instrument,
helps to keep that balance.

Back in the 80's I was told that working out was a fad and would be "out of
style". This may have been true had it only been about the "look", but
physical activity is conducive to a healthy body and mind. As it has always
been, people are attracted to "health". Probably from our days in the cave
seeking the healthy mate to procreate with, but thats another website. This is
why skin and bones or any other unhealthy condition will never be in fashion
too long, it's simply not healthy.
Why now?

I honestly don't know. I've given training advise to people from Australia to
New England and never thought about doing this until now. In this world of
easy communication on a blazing digital super highway, I just felt that
information that could benefit people should not be withheld. At the same
time it may hinder the next salesmen with a catchy name diet fad. I don't
want to change the world and I don't think I am perfect, but if someone wants
to make a change, and I have the tools to do it, shouldn't I make those tools
available?
As always, before starting any exercise or diet program you
should consult your personal physician.
